Protecting those who protect us
Fighting firefighter cancer through research, prevention & awareness. Honouring those who serve. Saving those still serving
Our Mission
The Hawkes Initiative of Firefighter Cancer Research and Prevention is dedicated to supporting firefighters affected by occupational cancer through research funding, education, and the promotion of cancer-prevention practices, including improved decontamination standards within fire services.
The Story Behind The Hawkes Initiative
Behind this initiative is a name that means everything to us — Captain Dave Hawkes.
For over 30 years, Dave served with Richmond Hill Fire. He wasn’t just a firefighter — he was a leader, a competitor, and a pillar in the community.
Dave pushed himself beyond limits in firefighter competitions, earning world records and setting times that have remained unbeaten for years. His drive and discipline defined him — but so did his commitment to others. Throughout his career, he dedicated countless hours to giving back, supporting charity events for MS and ALS, and leading food and toy drives to serve his community.
But like so many firefighters, the job didn’t end when the fire was out.
Dave was diagnosed with work-related cancer — a reality that far too many in the fire service face.
He fought. And he won.
Today, Dave is cancer-free. But he didn’t walk away from the fight — he stepped deeper into it.
Now, he travels, speaks, and educates other firefighters about the risks they face and the importance of prevention, early detection, and protecting one another.
The Hawkes Initiative was built from his story.
From his strength.
From his experience.
From the belief that no firefighter should face this battle alone — or unaware.
This is bigger than one person.
This is about changing the future of the fire service.
Because under every helmet is a life worth saving
