Behind The Mask is a storytelling series by The Hawkes Initiative dedicated to giving firefighters diagnosed with cancer a voice. These are real stories of courage, struggle, resilience, and truth — shared to honor those affected and to bring awareness to the growing reality of firefighter-related cancer.

For many firefighters, the toughest battles are not fought at the fireground, but in hospital rooms, during treatment, and in the quiet moments away from the uniform.

This space exists to:

  • Share lived experiences from firefighters across the fire service

  • Break the silence around occupational cancer risks

  • Educate and inspire prevention through real stories

  • Support and honor those navigating life after diagnosis

Every story reminds us that behind the mask is a parent, a partner, a teammate, and a person whose life has been forever changed.
